Municipal Fire Alarm System
Michael K. Laracy, Sr. Fire Chief
As of November 1, 2017 all Municipal Fire Alarm Boxes have been taken out of service throughout Town. These are the fire alarm pull boxes that you would find on various telephone poles, commonly called Street Boxes, and in some cases on pedestals. A decision by the Town to move from a hardwired municipal fire alarm system to wireless radio alarm system was made in 2012. Many businesses in Town had these fire alarm boxes on their buildings and they were given the option to transfer to a wireless box or go through a central alarm monitoring company. The deadline for this conversion was originally July 2014 and each year extended to accommodate businesses. The driving force to complete this conversion was the Town moving to a Central Public Safety Dispatch Center in November 2017 and modernizing to a wireless fire alarm system. In the coming months you will start to see the “Street Boxes” being removed under the Direction of the Fire Departments Fire Alarm Superintendent. Until such time the boxes are removed, you should see them covered. Once the boxes are removed the fire department will start dismantling the overhead wires.
