Mission Statement
The mission of the Town Clerk’s Office is to uphold the integrity of the Town’s democratic process, to maintain and preserve public records, and to act in the best interest of the community by providing innovative, efficient, quality service.

Licensing Officer
  • Issues state licenses; marriage licenses, raffle/bazaar permits, Las Vegas Night permits.
  • Issues county and town licenses; dog and kennel licenses, burial permits, business certificates, auctioneer licenses and fuel storage permits.

    Public Informations Officer
  • Responds to inquiries from the general public and facilitator with various departments.
  • Provides knowledge and assistance in a fair and impartial manner to all.
  • The Town Clerk’s Office serves as the central information point for local residents and citizens at large.

    Public Records Officer
  • Administers and records all oaths of office.
  • Posts meetings of all governmental bodies.
  • Responsible for informing all elected and appointed officials of the State’s Open Meeting Law and Conflict of Interest Laws.
  • Provides access to public records.
  • Maintains municipal laws (Town Code).
  • Responsible for submittal of new by-laws to the State Attorney General for approval.

    Recording Officer
  • Records and certifies all official action of the Town, including town meeting legislation and appropriations, Planning and Zoning Board decisions.
  • Certifies all notes for borrowing and is the keeper of the Town Seal.
  • Records state tax liens and child support enforcement liens.
  • Records all pole locations approved by Selectmen.

    Registrar of Vital Records
  • Registers all vital events (births, deaths, marriages and adoptions) occurring within the community and those events occurring elsewhere to Stoughton residents.
  • Records and preserves original vital records providing the basis for the Commonwealth’s central vital registration system.
  • Provides certified copies of vital records and assists with genealogical research.

    Voter Registration and Chief Election Official
  • Conducts all town, state and federal elections and Certifies nomination papers and initiative petitions.
  • Assists voters interested in running for public office.
  • Supervises voter registration and absentee balloting.
  • Conducts annual town census, annual street lists and assists the Jury Commissioner with the preparation of the Jury List.
  • Assists the Secretary of the Commonwealth with maintaining the Commonwealth’s Central Voter Registry.

  • HOW MAY I OBTAIN A BIRTH, MARRIAGE OR DEATH CERTIFICATE?
    You may write or come into the Town Clerk’s office for a birth, death or marriage certificate. There is an $10.00 fee for each certified copy. You may be asked to produce identification. Please have your driver’s license or some other form of identification available.

  • WHEN ARE DOG LICENSES DUE AND HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?
    All dogs six months of age or older are required to be licensed on or before January 1st of each year. Proof of valid rabies inoculation must be provided by the owner or keeper of the dog at the time the license is purchased.

    SPAYED DOGS $10.00
    MALE DOGS (Not Neutered) $15.00
    FEMALE DOGS (Not Spayed) $15.00
    KENNEL – One to Three Dogs $26.00
    KENNEL – Four to Ten Dogs $51.00
    KENNEL – More than Ten Dogs $101.00

    All owners or keepers are reminded that dogs not licensed on or before May 1st are subject to a $25.00 late fee in addition to the license fee. this by-law is strictly enforced.

  • DOES THE TOWN OF STOUGHTON SELL SPORTING LICENSES?
    The Town of Stoughton does not sell sporting licenses.

  • I HAVE JUST MOVED TO STOUGHTON. WHEN CAN I REGISTER TO VOTE?
    You may register to vote at any time after you move into Stoughton. You must register to vote at least twenty days before any Town or State election or Presidential Primary. Special voter registration sessions are held on the last day to register in the Town Clerk’s office from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

  • WHERE DO I VOTE AND WHAT TIME DO THE POLLS OPEN?
    The polls are open for all elections from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Polling places are located at the following sites:

  • I AM CONFINED TO MY HOME AND CANNOT GO TO THE POLLS TO VOTE. CAN I VOTE AN ABSENTEE BALLOT?
    A voter who is permanently disabled need not submit a request for an absentee ballot for every election. If a such a voter submits a note from a registered physician indicating that you are disabled permanently, the Town Clerk will automatically send an application for an absentee ballot each year for all elections for that year.

  • DO I HAVE TO APPEAR IN PERSON TO REGISTER TO VOTE?
    Voter registration in Stoughton has never been as easy as it is today. You may visit the Town Clerk’s office and complete a voter registration form in person. You may also register by mail. Mail-in voter registration forms are available at the Town Clerk’s office, Post Office, Stoughton Public Library, Council on Aging and various other locations throughout the State. Mail-in forms may also may be obtained by calling the State Elections Division at (800)462-VOTE or requesting a form from the Stoughton Town Clerk’s office at (781)341-1300, ext. 214. In addition, the State Registries of Motor Vehicles, social service agencies and military recruitment offices provide voter registration services.
