Travel Program

The Travel Program is a long-running series of travelogue/slide shows put on by a varietyof our local travelers. It is held the first Thursday night of the month at 7:30 pm from October through December and February through June in our Wales French Meeting Room. If you love to travel, but don't have the time or money right now, you will find our Travel Program series an easy way to journey without moving, and have a great time meeting your neighbors!

Book Discussion Group

Another more recently developed series is our Book Discussion Group. This group began in the fall of 1997 and has been going strong ever since. There are monthly meetings held on Thursdays at 7:00 pm. The books have been both fiction and non-fiction and have been by an eclectic lot: authors from Barbara Kingsolver and Jane Austen to James Carroll. Some choices have been One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia by Paul Theroux, and July's People by Nadine Gordimer - an equally eclectic selection. The members always have a great time discussing any and all of the books chosen, even if it turns out a member might not even like a particular book!

Adult Programs

There is also a series of Adult Programs scheduled every month which are of a more varied nature. For example, we had a speaker from the New England Historical and Genealogical Society give a talk on "Genealogy for Beginners". We've had portrayers of Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Louisa May Alcott. In December we usually have our local "Grace Notes Handbell Choir" perform Songs of the Season.  We also have had programs showing and giving the background of "Egg Decorating Faberge Style", and one on "Titanic Remembrances". As you can see from this small selection of our past selections, our Adult Programs series has something for everyone!

All of these Adult Programs are held in our Wales French Meeting Room. Assistance for the disabled is available upon request with adequate notice and light refreshments are served. For a list of specific dates you may check our program calendar, obtain flyers from the Library,  check the local newspaper and cable station listings, or contact Josh Olshin, Reference/Adult Service Librarian at the Stoughton Public Library at (781) 344-2711.

Outreach

The Outreach Program delivers large print books, books on tape, regular books, compact discs, videos and DVDs to those who are physically unable to access the library. People with short term as well as long term disabilities are welcomed to participate in the Outreach Program. Sue Hargreaves, the Outreach Coordinator, goes out every other week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The patron interested in this program can call 781-344-2711 and arrange for a convenient delivery time. The Coordinator will ask you about your reading tastes, interests and preferences. Most library materials go out for 2 weeks. In addition to the library materials listed above, the library has a new machine called The Traveller. The Traveller is small portable unit that magnifies print up to 16x. This machine can help visually impaired people read or view photographs. It goes out for one month at a time.

Teen Programs

There are a variety of programs held at the Library for teens in grades 6-12. Chess Club meets on Wednesday afternoons from October through May from 4:00-6:00 pm. Chess instructor Rema Galis presides! The Summer Reading Program is always great fun and is an opportunity for teens to read and win prizes, while getting involved in programs such as scrapbooking, kickboxing, tap dancing, etc. Just check our website or the local newspapers for what programs are coming up!

Children's Programs

There are a variety of programs for children of all ages. Among these programs are storyhours for preschoolers from 3 1/2-6 years old which are held on Friday afternoons and Teddybear Storytime which is held on Wednesday evenings. Both of these programs run from October through June.  Another popular program is the Story/Craft for 2 – 2 ½ year olds on Thursday mornings.  There is a one time sign-up and sessions run from October to June.  Craft programs for children in grades in K-5 are held on a monthly basis. Special programs such as children's concerts, puppet shows, storytellers and live animal programs are held intermittently throughout the school year.

During the summer months an average of 600 children of all ages enjoy our Summer Reading program in which small incentives (prizes) are awarded as children read books or have books read to them and record them in their reading logs. There are programs at the library in conjunction with the reading program throughout the summer. For more information on upcoming Children's Programs see our  or contact Barbara Pally, Childrens Librarian at (781) 344-2711.
